การใช้ PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
เราใช้ past continuous tense เพื่ออธิบายการกระทำหรือสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนหน้านี้ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในอดีตแต่ยังคงเกิดขึ้นเรื่อยมาจนถึงเวลาที่พูด หรือสามารถกล่าวได้ในอีกนัยหนึ่งว่า past continuous tense ใช้อธิบายสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตแต่ในปัจจุบันยังไม่เสร็จสมบูรณ์
หลักการใช้:
- มักจะถูกนำมาเพื่ออธิบายเบื้องหลังของเรื่องราวที่เขียนขึ้นในอดีต เช่น "The sun was shining and the birds were singing as the elephant came out of the jungle. The other animals were relaxing in the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly. She was looking for her baby, and she didn't notice the hunter who was watching her through his binoculars. When the shot rang out, she was running towards the river..."
- เพื่ออธิบายสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วแต่ยังไม่เสร็จสิ้นแต่มีอีกสิ่งหนึ่งเกิดแทรกเข้ามา เช่น "I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang."
- เพื่ออธิบายการเปลี่ยนใจ เช่น "I was going to spend the day at the beach but I've decided to get my homework done instead."
- เมื่อใช้ร่วมกับ 'wonder' จะทำให้การขอร้องบางสิ่งบางอย่างสุภาพขึ้น เช่น "I was wondering if you could baby-sit for me tonight."
ตัวอย่างเช่น
- A Cock was Strutting up and down the farmyard
- When we arrived he was having a bath.
- When the fire started I was watching television.
หมายเหตุ : หากคำกริยาตัวใดไม่สามารถใช้ในรูปของ -ing ได้ ให้ใช้ในรูปของ simple past tense แทน
คำกริยาใน past continuous tense จะประกอบไปด้วย 2 ส่วน ได้แก่ was/were (รูป past tense ของ "to be") และคำกริยา +ing.
