การใช้ PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

      เราใช้ past continuous tense เพื่ออธิบายการกระทำหรือสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนหน้านี้ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในอดีตแต่ยังคงเกิดขึ้นเรื่อยมาจนถึงเวลาที่พูด หรือสามารถกล่าวได้ในอีกนัยหนึ่งว่า past continuous tense ใช้อธิบายสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตแต่ในปัจจุบันยังไม่เสร็จสมบูรณ์

หลักการใช้:

• มักจะถูกนำมาเพื่ออธิบายเบื้องหลังของเรื่องราวที่เขียนขึ้นในอดีต เช่น "The sun was shining and the birds were singing as the elephant came out of the jungle. The other animals were relaxing in the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly. She was looking for her baby, and she didn't notice the hunter who was watching her through his binoculars. When the shot rang out, she was running towards the river..."
• เพื่ออธิบายสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วแต่ยังไม่เสร็จสิ้นแต่มีอีกสิ่งหนึ่งเกิดแทรกเข้ามา เช่น "I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang."
• เพื่ออธิบายการเปลี่ยนใจ เช่น "I was going to spend the day at the beach but I've decided to get my homework done instead."
• เมื่อใช้ร่วมกับ 'wonder' จะทำให้การขอร้องบางสิ่งบางอย่างสุภาพขึ้น เช่น  "I was wondering if you could baby-sit for me tonight."

ตัวอย่างเช่น 

• A Cock was Strutting up and down the farmyard
• When we arrived he was having a bath.
• When the fire started I was watching television.

หมายเหตุ : หากคำกริยาตัวใดไม่สามารถใช้ในรูปของ -ing ได้ ให้ใช้ในรูปของ simple past tense แทน 

คำกริยาใน past continuous tense จะประกอบไปด้วย 2 ส่วน ได้แก่ was/were (รูป past tense ของ "to be") และคำกริยา +ing.

ประธาน	was/were	กริยา + ing
They	were	watching
ประโยคบอกเล่า
She	was	reading
ประโยคปฏิเสธ
She	wasn't	reading
ประโยคคำถาม
Was	she	reading?
ประโยคคำถามเชิงปฏิเสธ
Wasn't	she	reading?

The Cock and the Gem stone

     A Cock was Strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he espied something shining amid the stray.  “Ho! Ho! quoth he, that ‘s for me,” and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. What did it turn out to be but a gem stone that by some chance had been lost in the yard? You may be a treasure” quoth the Cock, to men that prize you, but for me I would rather have a single rice-corn than a peck of gem stones。

     พ่อไก่ตัวหนึ่ง กำลังเดินไปมาอยู่ในไร่นาอยู่ท่ามกลางหมู่ไก่ตัวเมีย ขณะนั้นมันเห็นว่ามีอะไรบางอย่างแวบวับ อยู่ในกองฟาง “โก๊ก,โก๊ก” มันเอ่ยปาก “นั่นมันลาภของกูนี่หว่า” ว่าแล้วมันก็ใช้ปากจิกออกมาจากกองฟางมันได้เม็ดพลอยมา ที่มีใครบังเอิญทำตกไว้ในที่นั้น “แกอาจเป็นทรัพย์สมบัติอันมีค่า” พ่อไก่พูด “สำหรับมนุษย์ที่ตีราคาให้แกแต่สำหรับข้าแล้วได้ข้าวเปลือกเพียงเม็ดเดียวยังจะดีกว่าได้พลอยตั้งกอง
